North Central College Chemistry Students Pioneer AI-Driven Research with Alumni Startup
In a groundbreaking collaboration, almost 100 North Central College undergraduate students are using artificial intelligence to revolutionize their chemistry research, thanks to a partnership between the Chemistry Department and Chemetrian, an AI startup co-founded by alumnus Dr. Antonio LaPorte ('18).
Under the guidance of Professors Jeffrey Bjorklund and Nicholas Boaz, students in Organic Chemistry II Laboratory are applying advanced machine learning techniques to optimize the synthesis of a water-soluble derivative of Tyrian purple, a historically significant dye.
"Finding the right chemical reaction conditions is similar to perfecting a recipe in cooking," explains Dr. LaPorte. "Just as a chef must balance ingredients and cooking times, chemists must fine-tune various parameters to achieve optimal results. Traditionally, this has been a time-consuming trial-and-error process."
The students are using Bayesian optimization, a sophisticated machine learning approach that makes this process more efficient. Rather than testing conditions randomly, the AI algorithm learns from each experiment and suggests the most promising conditions to try next, significantly reducing the number of experiments needed to find optimal reaction conditions.
"This collaboration allows students to directly use cutting edge Bayesian optimization in their course-based research project," says Prof. Boaz. "Our students are gaining hands-on experience with tools that are transforming modern chemistry research, better preparing them for the chemistry jobs of tomorrow."
